Short text as written in the original proposal:
My proposal for Johann-Gottfried-Herder-Gymnasium is to think of the main staircase of building A simply as an autobahn. The staircase is the busiest area in the building, with students and teachers running up and down in constant movement. I chose the ceilings of each staircase as the ideal places for the artworks, since it is an untouchable area: children and adults cannot reach it without assistance, and it is also an area free of orientation signs, sprinklers or light fixtures. The playful painted murals consist of 3 colors in various shape combinations: white retro-reflective street marking paint; Highly visible neon yellow; and graphite dark grey, with a texture resembling the one of asphalt.
The Johann-Gottfried-Herder-Gymnasium is proud and known for it’s multilingual and highly international student mix. On the Road signifies these values though the notion of movement and travel in space, seeing the Gymnasium as a dynamic common ground for exchange of cultural knowledge and experience.
